When I interviewed you guys a couple of years ago (Dirty 3 interview) you downplayed your side-projects as ... side-projects. Now you have a new album out (review at www.scaruffi.com/cdreview/1999.html) and it's another monumental work, certainly not a "in passing" project. How serious is your solo career now?
It's still something I might work on when I'm not doing Dirty3 , D3 still takes up most of my time. We all (in dirty3) have other musical endeavours - Warren spends much time playing with Nick Cave, Jim also has been playing with NC and has done other tours such as Catpower in Usa las t year. We all like the idea of branching out and playing with other people or working on outside projects, being an artist I hope means expanding an d evoluting your ideas and these outside projects help us not to stagnate.. ..

What can you do with your solo albums that you cannot do with the band?
Well basically use the guitar more and explore more sublime moods a nd experiment more. Dirty 3's music tends to be more confrontational I think, more demanding of one's attention. My solo music so far requires more effort from the listener in a way to find within it what it's saying.

I perceive lots of experimentation on the sound of the guitar but I am way to ignorant to figure out what you are doing: do you mind educating me on some of your favorite techniques (feel free to make reference to specific tracks).
The technique I've been messing with the most is using improvised loops, layering them and playing on top of them. the repetition can be hypnotic, I see it as being a mirror to life, even an expression of life - the repeating loops are like the rhythms in living like heartbeats and breathing, days and seasons etc etc So many things repeat, the melodies stagger and dance and swing and fall like events emotions and thoughts. for me this music is a celebration of life, all of it, good or bad, for m e its a way to understand things I can't say with words

Is this album an organic project or a collection of music that you has been composed over the years or... how did it come to be?
Most of it was recorded in the past year or so, mostly on home type multitrack recorders whenever I had the time, much of it is improvised or has some such elements

Quando vi ho intervistato un paio di anni fa (Dirty 3 interview) ti sei limitato a definire i tuoi progetti collaterali come ... progetti collaterali. Ora hai un nuovo album in circolazione (review at www.scaruffi.com/cdreview/1999.html) e si tratta di un'altra opera monumentale, certamente non un progetto "di passaggio". Adesso, quanto è diventata importante la tua carriera solista?
È ancora qualcosa a cui posso dedicarmi quando non sono impegnato con i Dirty3 , i D3 si prendono ancora la maggior parte del mio tempo. Tutti noi (nei dirty3) abbiamo altri impegni musicali - Warren passa molto tempo a suonare con Nick Cave, anche Jim ha suonato con Nick Cave ed ha fatto altri tours come quello americano dei Catpower dello scorso anno. A tutti noi piace l'idea di diversificare la nostra attività e di suonare con altra gente o di lavorare a progetti esterni. Essendo un artista io credo che ciò rappresenti un'espansione ed un'evoluzione delle proprie idee e che questi progetti esterni ci aiutino a non ristagnare.. ..

Cosa puoi fare nei tuoi lavori solisti che non potresti fare con la band?
Fondamentalmente utilizzo di più la chitarra, esploro stati d'animo più sublimi e sperimento in maggior misura. Penso che la musica dei Dirty 3 abbia la tendenza a richiedere più attenzione dal pubblico. Invece la mia musica solista richiede all'ascoltatore uno sforzo maggiore per scoprire cosa sta dietro la musica.

Intuisco molta sperimentazione nel tuo modo di suonare la chitarra, ma non riesco ad immaginare quello che stai facendo: vorresti illustrarmi alcune delle tue tecniche preferite (sentiti libero di fare riferimenti a brani specifici).
La tecnica con cui mi sono gingillato maggiormente consiste nell'utilizzare loops improvvisati, nel sovrapporli e nel suonarvi sopra. La ripetizione può essere ipnotica, io la vedo come uno specchio della vita, persino un'espressione della vita - i loops ripetuti sono come i ritmi della vita, come il battito cardiaco ed il respiro, giorni e stagioni ecc. ecc. Così tante cose si ripetono, le melodie ondeggiano, danzano, oscillano e cadono come avvenimenti, emozioni e pensieri. Per me questa musica è una celebrazione della vita, di tutto, buono o cattivo. Per me è un modo per capire cose che non posso esprimere a parole.

Questo album è un progetto organico o raccoglie brani musicali che hai composto nel corso degli anni oppure ... come è venuto fuori?
La maggior parte del disco è stata registrata più o meno l'anno scorso, per lo più per mezzo di registratori multitraccia amatoriali ogni volta che ne ho avuto il tempo. Gran parte è improvvisata o giù di lì.
