In 1973 Miles Davis' pianist Lonnie Liston Smith formed the Cosmic Echoes (sax, guitar, piano, bass, drums and exotic percussions). Astral Traveling (1973) offered a mellow and mostly melodic sound imbued with Eastern spirituality. But Smith soon turned towards even smoother elements of funk and soul music on albums such as Expansions (november 1974).
