Notes (2024):

• Berlin's Egyptian Museum is a frustrating experience: horrible lighting, impossible to read the tiny labels placed at knee level, glass encasements reflect your own image when you're trying to admire the object, the thematic rooms are confusing because they mix objects from different eras. Note that no pictures of the famous Nefertiti bust are allowed.
• Nuremberg's Museum is another frustrating experience, although not as bad: poorly lit, unreadable labels, objects kept in glass cages. Also mandatory locker for your backpack (not included in the price of the ticket).
• Train to Potsdam: S-Bahn (40 minutes, Berlin ABC ticket, S$4) from Berlin S-Bahn S7 every 10 minutes, rent a bike at train station
• Neuschwanstein is a colossal ripoff. To get there you can take a train from Munich to Fussen, then a bus from Fussen to the village (bus number 78 for sure). There is a Bayern Ticket that covers the whole day: train and bus. Once you get to the village, you can take a cheap shuttle (3 euros in 2024) to the castle (10-15 minutes of a very winding road). Then you still have to walk about 10 minutes. The ripoff is the ticket to visit the castle, which amounts to pretty much nothing for a lot of money (18 euros in 2024). Warning: this is German disorganization at its worst. Bus 78 from Fussen to the village is routinely overcrowded. There is no information and no customer service during weekends. Ask around where the bus stops. Expect fights to get into the bus. The bus drops you in front of the information office, which is totally useless. Walk 100 meters uphill to the ticket office. Then walk another 100 meters past the Muller Hotel to the (unmarked) stop for the shuttle. Pay for the shuttle (as of 2024, the bus driver only takes cash). There's probably going to be a long line but at least here it's clear where you have to queue up. But this shuttle too is always overcrowded. Don't expect to sit. On the way back the queue is not organized and tourists risk their lives to get into the shuttle when it arrives. There is a chronic lack of shuttle buses. Walk to the castle along the path. At the castle you can take all the pictures that you want outside. When your time comes (make sure not to be late), your ticket will be able to open the gate to go inside, but don't delay because the ticket expires after a few minutes. Again: no information, no customer service, just chaos. It's all designed to maximize the inconvenience. Is it worth it? Absolutely not. The art inside the castle is worth nothing. Hearst Castle in California has 100 times better art (not because Hearst collected good art but because Ludwig bought really bad one). In theory, you're supposed to book a tour on the website. In practice, it's a really bad idea for two reasons: 1. Most tourists underestimate how long it takes to get to the castle (train station + bus transfer + shuttle + walk) and so they arrive late for their tour and, this being Germany, they have to buy another ticket; 2. The tour is a big scam, as you only get to see 4 or 5 rooms, with some of the worst art ever exhibited in a building, and no pictures are allowed inside the castle, only outside; 3. The "tour" is not a tour with a guide, as there are two escorts whose only function is to make sure that you don't take pictures, while your "guide" is the audioguide. Best is that you take the shuttle to the castle and take pictures around it. You are allowed inside the courtyard for free. If you pay for the tour, you'll waste a lot of time (unlikely a spot is available at the time you arrive) and money, and get very upset after you see what the tour is. Bring your own food and drinks because the village has the worst food and most expensive drinks you'll experience in your Bavarian trip. Generally speaking you are treated like cattle from the moment you step out of the train in Fussen.
