Eastern Trailhead to Black Mountain

The main entrance to Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve is through Rancho San Antonio County Park: take the Foothill Boulevard exit of 280, turn right onto Cristo Rey Drive, drive about 2 kms, turn left into the parking lot.

Black Mountain

From 280 take the El Monte/Moody Road exit and drive west on El Monte. After Foothill College, turn left onto Moody Road. Continue on Moody (at the next junction bear left to stay on Moody) and (in about 2 kms) turn left onto Rhus Ridge Road and after 300 meters turn right into the parking lot. The parking lot address is: 11917 Rhus Ridge Road, Los Altos Hills.

From here to the summit of Black Mountain takes about 2.5 hours. This is a 15 km roundtrip hike that affords the best views of Silicon Valley. Start at the Rhus Ridge parking lot if you want to avoid the crowds of the main Rancho San Antonio parking lot: 11917 Rhus Ridge Road, Los Altos Hills, off Moody Road. Just go straight, ignoring all detours. The top is not marked. It is a pile of rock facing west just past the communication antennas.

Black Mountain can also be reached from the Duveneck Windmill trailhead.
