The first crossover between rock music, Middle-Eastern music and jazz was attempted by John Berberian, a New York-born oud virtuoso of Armenian descent, on Expressions East (1964), that featured an arsenal of Turkish, Armenian and Arabic instruments.

Middle Eastern Rock (1969) was a collaboration with jazz guitarist Joe Beck.
