His masterpieces, Preachin' The Blues (1930), a lengthy autobiographical ballad recorded as a two-sided 78 RPM record With guitarist Willie Brown and pianist Louise Johnson, My Black Mama (same sessions), and Country Farm (1942), also autobiographical, embody the quintessence of the country blues.

He was rediscovered with Father of the Folk Blues (1965).
