Joe Meek, a successful British producer who is credited with reinventing
the studio as an instrument, produced the Tornados' instrumental novelty
Telstar (1962), the first British record to top the USA charts.
He also composed the first concept album of rock music,
I Hear A New World (1960 - RPM, 2003), around the theme of
extra-terrestrial life, a pretext to show his sonic dexterity and creativity.
Meek teamed with songwriter Geoff Goddard and vocalist John Leyton to
produce eerie songs of mystical subject and full of sound effects (due to the unusual locations where
they were recorded, such as bathrooms, and to the second-hand instrumentation
used):
