Formati nel 1971 da quattro star della musica svedese,
il tastierista Benny Andersson (degli Hep Stars) e la sua compagna
e teenage-idol Agnetha Faltskog, il chitarrista Bjorn Ulvaeus
(ex Hootenanny Singers) e la sua compagna Synni "Frida" Lyngstad,
gli Abba furono il gruppo pop di maggior successo fra l'era di Supremes e
Beatles e l'era di Michael Jackson.
I loro motivetti orecchiabili, da Waterloo (1974) a Mamma Mia (1975)
e all'elegia marziale di Fernando (1976), dai ritmi spigliati e dai testi
innocenti, rinnovarono i fasti della musica per famiglia che era rimasta
ferma ai ritornelli dei Beatles.
Da Dancing Queen (1977) l'attenzione si sposto` verso la discoteca,
genere in cui gli Abba eccelsero grazie a
Lay All Your Love On Me (1981),
ma sempre
nell'ottica di un sapiente artigianato melodico, culminato nell'atmosfera
melodrammatica di
Knowing Me Knowing You (1977), nelle sofisticate armonie vocali di
Take A Chance On Me (1978) e nell'epos sentimentale di Chiquitita (1979).
Alternando ritornelli innocenti come Gimme Gimme Gimme (1979) e
Supertrouper (1981)
a melodrammi intensi come Winner Takes It All (1980), il capolavoro,
e The Day Before You Came (1982),
gli Abba si ritagliarono un posto nella storia del pop sentimentale.
Gli Abba si sciolsero nel 1982. Benny Andersson e Bjorn Ulvaeus scrissero ancora un classico, che forse rimane il loro capolavoro: One Night In Bangkok (1985) per Murray Head. |
Abba were the reigning champions of pop during
the 1970s. They began with effervescent vocal harmonies coupled with catchy
upbeat refrains, notably Waterloo (1974) and Fernando (1976),
but then proved to excel also in the discos, with
Dancing Queen (1977) and Gimme Gimme Gimme (1979),
and finally ventured into the romantic melodrama with
Knowing Me Knowing You (1977) and Winner Takes It All (1980).
Supertrouper (1981) returned them to their naive-pop glory, and,
after Abba disbanded, their leaders and songwriters managed to top all of this
with a superb exotic pastiche,
Murray Head's One Night In Bangkok (1985).
