Clannad is the most successful of the pop-celtic bands of the early 1970s.
Clannad formed in 1970 in Ireland as a family band:
Maire Brennan (harp), Ciaran Brennan (guitar, bass, keyboards),
Paul Brennan (guitar, percussion, flute), and later
Noel Duggan (guitar) and Padraig Duggan (guitar).
They debuted with Clannad (Philips, 1973) and got their first hits with
the traditionals Coinleach Ghlas and Dheanainn Sugradh, from
Clannad 2 (Gael, 1974). The second album already featured synthesizers
and African percussions, a veritable manifesto of electronic celtic music.
Dulaman (Gael, 1976),
Crann Ull (Tara, 1980), that contains
The Last Rose of Summer,
and Fuaim (1982), that added Maire's sister Enya,
moved towards a sophisticated pop style that was crowned with the
tv soundtrack of Harry's Game (1982), an atmospheric pastiche of voices
and synthesizers.
Enya
left for her solo career, while Clannad continued to cather to the
pop audience the lushly arranged and dreamy albums of their second phase:
Magical Ring (Tara, 1983),
Macalla (RCA, 1985), famous for
In A Lifetime (1985), a collaboration with Bono,
Sirius (MCA, 1988),
Atlantic Realm (1989),
Anam (RCA, 1990),
Banba (RCA, 1993).
Lore (RCA, 1996),
Landmarks (RCA, 1998).
Pastpresent (1989) is an anthology.
Themes and Films (1998) summarizes their tv and cinema soundtracks.

I Clannad sono forse la più famosa band di musica pop-celtica degli ultimi anni 70.
Essi si formarono nel 1970 in Irlanda, e la scelta del nome della band non è stato casuale, visto che formavano un vero e proprio clan: Maire Brennan (arpa), Ciaran Brennan (chitarra, basso, tastiere), Paul Brennan (chitarra, percussioni, flauto), ed infine Noel Duggan (chitarra) e Padraig Duggan (chitarra).
Il loro debutto è stato con Clannad (Philips, 1973), ma è solo con Clannad 2 (Gael, 1974) che vengono conosciuti attraverso le ballate tradizionali Coinleach Ghlas e Dheanainn Sugradh,.
Questo secondo album è inoltre arricchito da percussioni Africane e da sintetizzatori, tale da diventare un genuino manifesto di musica celtica elettronica. I successivi lavori Dulaman (Gael, 1976), Crann Ull (Tara, 1980), che contiene The Last Rose of Summer, e Fuaim (1982), dove alla formazione si è aggiunta anche Enya, sorella di Maire, si muovono attraverso stili pop elaborati, e danzanti accostamenti canori con sintetizzatori, tanto da essere utilizzati per una colonna sonora del ciclo televisivo Harry's Game (1982).
Enya intanto lascia il gruppo per continuare la sua carriera solista, mentre i Clannad continuano a catturare audience con i loro arrangiamenti estremamente ricchi e lussureggianti ed i loro sognanti albums della loro seconda fase: Magical Ring (Tara, 1983), Macalla (RCA, 1985), famoso per il brano In A Lifetime (1985), una collaborazione con Bono Vox (U2), Sirius (MCA, 1988), Atlantic Realm (1989), Anam (RCA, 1990), Banba (RCA, 1993).
