Jim Croce was a folksinger from Philadelphia, who became an oddity in the New York
folk scene, singing simple bluesy ballads that reached for the heart rather than
for the brain.
After a tentative album recorded with his wife, Jim & Ingrid Croce (Capitol, 1969),
Croce bloomed on You Don't Mess Around with Jim (ABC, 1972) and the
singles You Don't Mess Around with Jim (a ragtime-and-gospel novelty
and Operator.
Life And Times (ABC, 1973) continued along that path with another
novelty, Bad Bad Leroy Brown.
I Got a Name (ABC, 1973) increased the dose of pathos with
I Got A Name, an epic existential ode by composer Charles Fox,
and I Have to Say I Love You in a Song.
The single Time In A Bottle was a nostalgic and classical-sounding
madrigal for harpsichord and guitar.
Croce had written some of the most majestic melodies of the era, and was still
maturing.
An untimely death (september 1973, airplane accident) kept Croce from becoming what Simon & Garfunkel had been for
the previous generation.
