Marianne Faithfull, la fatina di Come And Stay With Me (1965, di Jackie DeShannon) e altre cover, venne poi traviata dai Rolling Stones in drogata nichilista con l'anthem anti-droga Sister Morphine (1969). Dopo qualche anno di silenzio e album mediocri come Dreaming My Dreams (1976), un album di country music riedito come Faithless (Immediate, 1978), che peraltro contiene un altro momento magico (That Was The Day), risorse alla fine degli anni '70 nei panni della chanteuse decadente da cabaret espressionista con Broken English (Island, 1979), una raccolta di lieder tenebrosi che la sua voce rauca e disperata (reminescente di Marlene Dietrich) trasforma in odi metafisiche (Ballad Of Lucy Jordan, Why'd Ya Do It, Working Class Hero). Gli fece seguito un mediocre Dangerous Acquaitances (Island, 1981). I due album vennero poi riassunti su A Perfect Stranger (Island, 1998). A Child's Adventure (Island, 1983) e` migliore (She's Got a Problem, Times Square), ma ancora lontano dalla forma di Broken English.

Continuando quella parabola, Faithfull pervenne poi al pop-jazz sofisticato di Strange Weather (Island, 1987), una raccolta di "standards" del blues e del jazz. L'album verra` ristampato su CD con Broken English (Mobile Fidelity).

Dopo un altro periodo di oscurita`, Faithfull si e` ripresentata in vesti ancor piu` "serie" con 20th Century Blues (RCA, 1997), una raccolta di cover d'autore, A Secret Life (Island, 1999), un album composto e arrangiato da Angelo Badalamenti, Vagabond Ways (Instinct, 2000), ancora prevalentemente covers, e Kissin Time (Virgin, 2002), un tentativo mal riuscito di aggiornarla al techno e al synth-pop facendo leva su materiale di star del momento (Beck, Billy Corgan degli Smashing Pumpkin, Blur, Jarvis Cocker dei Pulp, l'ex-Eurythmics Dave Stewart).

Faithfull engaged a new generation of singer-songwriters on Before The Poison (Anti, 2005), mainly Polly Jean Harvey (The Mystery of Love) and Nick Cave (Desperanto).

The double-disc Easy Come, Easy Go (2008) was an elegant but pointless collection with covers ranging from ancient country and soul stars. The covers on Horses and High Heels (2011) weren't even elegant.

Give My Love to London (Dramatico, 2014), her 20th solo album, featured Nick Cave (Late Victorian Holocaust) and Roger Waters (Sparrows Will Sing) among others, and even Brian Eno on backing vocals for the cover of Leonard Cohen's Going Home.

Negative Capability (2018) featured new songs by Nick Cave (The Gypsy Faerie Queen), Mark Lanegan (They Come at Night), and several with Ed Harcourt.

She Walks In Beauty (2021) is a spoken-word album with ambient music composed by Warren Ellis. The texts are poems by Yeats, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, Byron and Tennyson. Brian Eno plays clarinet and Nick Cave plays piano and vibraphone in The Bridge Of Sighs (plus Vincent Segal on cello and Warren Ellis on celesta), which also happens to be the piece that most closely resembles Eno's original ambient album. The ghostly La Belle Dame Sans Merci has Brian Eno on electronics, Nick Cave on piano and Ellis on Violin. The Lady Of Shallot floats for 12 minutes in a celestial landscape sculpted by ondes martenot and synth.

She died in 2025.
