Glass was formed in 1969, after bassist Jeff Sherman, drummer Jerry Cook and
and keyboardist Greg Sherman saw the Soft Machine perform in Seattle.
Their only album was recorded between 1975 and 1978, but
released only fifteen years later, in the double-disc
No Stranger To The Skies (Relentless Pursuit, 2000), followed
by No Stranger To The Skies - Volume III (2001), which contains more
archival material.
The original recordings feature
electric piano, Hammond organ, mellotron, synthesizers.
The nine-minute opening track, No Stranger to the Skies, offers a
mixture of Soft Machine's third album and King Crimson's first album,
jazzy, majestic, melodic, dynamic, cosmic. Halfway through the piece, a flute
motif, eerily reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven, changes
pace and mood in a soothing manner.
The Myopic Stream is also close in spirit to Canterbury progressive-rock,
although, again, the emphasis on melody is much stronger.
Following a flute-driven medieval dance,
the piano-driven scherzo that ends Domino has the
playful tone of a Mozart sonata as performed by the likes of Keith Jarrett.
Another highlight is the
12-minute For Ursula Major and Sirius the Dog Star, that begins as
a wild caribbean dance and segues into a baroque rondo` and finally into a
sublime piano-driven aria.
There are even echoes of Terry Riley's minimalism and of Mike Oldfield's
folkish suites.
The glue that holds these fantasias together is the strong, jazzy
underpinning that comes from the rhythm section and from the interplay between
lead instrument and backing instruments.
The second disc contains
the 10-minute Changer,
the 12-minute Patrice Mersault's Dream, a joyful romp propelled by one
of their catchiest tunes, and a 30-minute version of Broken Oars,
particularly the
carefully orchestrated and frantically futuristic second movement
and the soulfully Bach-ian aria of the fourth, march-like movement.
Greg Sherman has released Zutique (1988 - Relentless Pursuit, 2002),
an album of instrumental piano music.
