Premiata Forneria Marconi were the leading band of the Italian prog-rock school.
A quintet centered on multi-instrumentalist Mauro Pagani, they resembled
Yes and
King Crimson, but added a softer melodic
quality to the cliches of the genre.
Storia di un Minuto (Numero Uno, 1972) and Per Un Amico (1972)
were song-oriented collections, later summarized on
Photos Of Ghosts (Manticore, 1973).
They perfected a fluid style of arrangement that neutralized the timbres of
guitar, synthesizer, violin and flute.
PFM tried in vain to keep their style current on
L'Isola di Niente (1974) and Chocolate Kings (Asylum, 1975),
but it was rapidly becoming outdated.
They basically converted to jazz-rock with Jet Lag (1977).

La Premiata Forneria Marconi fu la maggiore band della scuola italiana di progressive rock. Quintetto imperniato attorno al polistrumentista Mauro Pagani, si avvicinava a Yes e King Crimson, ma con l’aggiunta di una più morbida qualità melodica ai modelli del genere. Storia Di Un Minuto (Numero Uno, 1972) e Per Un Amico (1972) furono album orientanti al canto, più tardi riassunti su Photos Of Ghosts (Manticore, 1973). Il gruppo perfezionò uno stile di arrangiamento fluido capace di far convergere i timbri di chitarra, sintetizzatore, violino e flauto.
La PFM tentò invano di mantenere il suo stile attuale su L'Isola di Niente (1974) e Chocolate Kings (Asylum, 1975), ma stava rapidamente diventando sorpassato. Passarono completamente al jazz-rock con l’album Jet Lag (1977).
