Amon Duul II's drummer and guitarist
Daniel Fischelscher joined
Popol Vuh for Seligpreisung (Pilz, september 1973), which features again
Eliscu, Veit and Wiese.
This was to be the first album of a mystic trilogy devoted to holy books:
Seligpreisung, only 30 minutes long, Einsjager und Siebenjager,
35-minutes long, and Das Hohelied Salomos.
Popol Vuh could not be accused of flooding the world with too much music.
Selig Sind die da Hungern
opens with the same languid guitar tones of
Hosianna Mantra, coupled with tablas and ecstatic cantillation,
but the rhythm picks up quickly and establishes the more "earthly" feeling
of this album.
The instrumental Tanz der Chassidim is a light boogie jam not all that
different from, say, Steve Miller or latter-day Grateful Dead.
Ditto for Selig Sind die da Willig Arm Sind.
Also lively is
the "halleluja" of Selig Sind die Sanftmuetigen.
Eliscu's lyrical oboe melody and Fricke's solemn piano figures
pen the most meditative pieces, Selig Sind die da Hier Weinen and
Ja Sie Sollen Gottes Kinder Heissen - Agnus Dei.
Fricke's vocals are not exactly the most evocative, and, unfortunately
this is an album of songs.
Popol Vuh was paired down to the trio of Fricke, Fichelscher (guitar and drums)
and Yun for the two following albums.
Einsjager Und Siebenjager (Pilz, 1974),
is a more substantial work (or at least more "rock" work) than its short
predecessor.
Gutes Land is only a reworking of the Agnus Dei, but
the instrumental Fricke-Fichelscher jams of King Minos,
Morgengruss and Wurfelspiel offer some intriguing interplay
(but the dominant instrument is now the guitar).
Yun resurfaces in the 19-minute Einsjager Und Siebenjager, but the core
of the piece is still the guitar-driven instrumental jamming, which covers a lot
of ground, echoing again the laid-back country-boogie style of latter-day
Grateful Dead but also piling up spiritual overtones as it develops the fragile
melodic theme. Epic piano figures propel the triumphal ending.
Fricke, Fichelscher and Yun are still in excellent form on
Das Hohelieds Salomons (UA, 1975),
another concept inspired by the "Song of Solomon",
which adds an Indian flavor to the mix, thanks to
Al Gromer (sitar) and Shana Kumar (tablas).
Tracks:
Steh Auf, Zieh Mich Dir Nach,
Du Schonste Der Weiber,
In Den Nachten Auf Den Gassen I,
Du Sohn Davids I,
In Den Nachten Auf Den Gassen II,
Der Winter Ist Vorbei,
Ja, Deine Liebe Ist Susser Als Wein,
Du Sohn Davids II,
Du Tranke Mich Mit Deinen Kussen.
In the meantime, Fricke had started a collaboration with German film-maker
Werner Herzog, which will become a keystone of his career.
Aguirre (Ohr, 1976 - SPV, 2005) contains both leftovers from
previous albums (Vergegenwaertigung, a 16-minute solo-electronics work
recorded in 1972, Morgengruss II and Agnus Dei from the
Einsjager Und Siebenjager sessions), and music from Werner Herzog's
1972 film (Aguirre I - Lacrime di Re, Aguirre II).
The line-up was still the trio of Fricke, Fichelscher and Yun.
Around this time, Fricke also recorded a sonata for solo piano,
Spirit of Peace, which will surface on the reissue of
In The Gardens Of Pharao (Celestial Harmonies, 1980) and on the CD
reissue of Aguirre (Zyx, 1999).
Florian Fricke also released the solo album
Die Erde Und Ich Sind Eins (Ltd, 1975), containing the
12-minute Die Erde und ich sind Eins and the eight-minute
Song of the Earth.
Letzte Tage Letze Naechte (UA, 1976) is, surprisingly, an album in the
vein of early Amon Duul II or Agitation Free.
Fricke and Fichelscher (responsible for all instruments) truly "rock". The
dialectics between the two is a show in itself:
the guitar is the demon that jumps out of every passage, while the piano is
the angel that tries to keep warmth and quiet. The guitar is pure, edonistic
chaos, while the piano is ascetic, classical order.
Fricke's lyrical soul can be heard in Kyrie and Dort Ist Der Weg.
The guitar steals the show in Der Grosse Krieger.
Djong Yun and Renate Knaup provide the vocals, and they, in turn, steal the show
in the closing Letzte Tage Letzte Naechte.
The soundtrack for Herzog's film Herz Aus Glas (Spalax, january 1977),
also known as Coeur De Verre and as
Singet Denn Der Gesang Vertreibt Die Wolfe, includes the
eight-minute Engel Der Gegenwart, Das Lied Von Den Hohen Bergen,
Der Ruf
and especially Singet Denn Der Gesang Vertreibt Die Woelfe.
Fricke, Fichelscher, Gromer and Mattias Tippelskirch on flute manage to
recreate some of the magic of Hosianna Mantra.
Sing For Song Drives Away The Wolves (Milan, 1993) compiles songs from Coeur de Verre and Einsjager & Siebenjager.
Yoga (PDU, 1976 - Tempel, 1992) contains two Fricke ragas performed
by Indian musicians (sitar, tamboura, tabla).
Herzog's "Nosferatu" yielded material for two albums.
On The Way To A Little Way - Nosferatu (Egg, 1978) is the inferior one.
Fricke, Fichelscher and Gromer pen Brueder Des Schattens - Nosferatu (Brain, 1978), which contains four pieces.
Hoere Der Du Wagst and Soehne Des Lichts rank among their best,
thanks to a serene, mystic, deeply personal stance that basically transposes
Hosianna Mantra into gothic music.
Die Nacht Der Seele (Brain, 1979), also released with additional
material as
Tantric Songs (Celestial Harmonies, 1981), and recorded by an
ensemble of Fricke, Fichelscher, Yun, Amon Duul II's Renate Knaup on vocals,
Susan Goetting on oboe, Alois Gromer on sitar, is an ideal continuation of
Hosianna Mantra. The structure of the album (brief, intense psalms) is
similar as are the sparse arrangements. Furthermore, the setting is fully
acoustic. The music is less powerful, possibly because it is less
spontaneous, but the chamber mantras and melodic vignettes of
Wanderer Durch Die Nacht,
Mantram Der Erdberuhrung,
Mantram Der Herzberuhrung,
Engel Der Luft,
Im Reich Der Schatten,
still attain a nirvana of their own.
Sei Stille, Wisse Ich Bin (Innovative Communications, 1981) is
influenced by Klaus Schulze (for example in the
100-voices choir), although the massive sound is still used for mantric
purposes.
At this point Popol Vuh were basically the duo of Fricke and Fichelscher.
Both Renate Knaup and Chris Karrer (of Amon Duul II) guest.
The duo of Fricke and Fichelscher collaborated again with Renate Knaup and
Conny Veit on Agape Agape (Uniton, 1982), mainly notable for the
eponymous suite.
By the 1980s, Fricke relied mainly on commissions from Herzog.
Despite the collage-like assembly of diverse materials,
Fitzcarraldo (Zyx, 1982) offers a few intriguing vignettes:
Wehe Khorazin (an experiment with nonsensical vocals),
Als Lebten Die Engel Auf Erden (an experiment with guitar overdubs),
Engel Der Luft,
Im Gaerten Der Gemeinschaft.
Spirit Of Peace (Cicada, 1986 - Base, 1987 - Tempel, 1992) sounds like
a sell-out to the cliches of new-age music.
The 17-minute Take The Tension High and the eight-minute
Song Of Earth can be appealing at times, but they are way too
self-indulgent.
The 3-CD box-set On The Himalaya (Spalax) collects
Brueder Des Schattens, Spirit Of Peace and Die Nacht Der Seele.
A new soundtrack for Herzog, Cobra Verde (Milan, 1987), offered a
few inspired moments:
Eine Andere Welt , Der Tod Des Banditen ,
Junge Maedchen Hozhiavie.
Fricke and Fischelscher recruited Guido Hieronymus on guitar and keyboards,
Renate Knaup on vocals, and Anne-Marie O'Farell on harp, to make
For You And Me (Milan, 1991), a minor work of conventional world-music
(Little Bazaari, Om Mani Padme Hum).
After a bizarre Florian Fricke Plays Mozart (Bell, 1992),
Popol Vuh
(Fricke, Fichelscher, Hieronymus and vocalist Maya Rose)
recorded City Raga (Milan, 1994), an attempt to adapt to the new sounds
and production techniques of the 1990s, including plenty of drum-machines
(City Raga, Morning Raga).
Music from Werner Herzog's Films Soundtracks (Pilz, 1982 - Spalax , 1996),
Gesang der Gesaenge (Cicada, 1988 - High Tide, 1994),
Florian Fricke (Bell, 1992),
Best (Milan, 1993),
Movie Music (1994)
Nicht Hoch Im Himmel (Mystic, 1998),
are anthologies.
The seven-movement Shepherd's Symphony (Mystic, 1997), that assimilates
elements of techno and hip-hop,
was recorded by the trio of Fricke, Fiedler and Hieronymus.
Messa di Orfeo (Spalax, 1998) documents a 1998 multimedia installation
by Fricke (keyboards), Fiedler (video), Guillermina De Germano (vocals) and Maya Rose (vocals).
Florian Fricke of Popol Vuh died in december 2001 at the age of 57.

(Traduzione di/translated by John Politico)
Kinder Heissen - Agnus Dei.
trionfale finale.
Schonste Der Weiber, In Den Nachten Auf Den Gassen I, Du Sohn Davids I, In
Den Nachten Auf Den Gassen II, Der Winter Ist Vorbei, Ja, Deine Liebe Ist
Susser Als Wein, Du Sohn Davids II, Du Tranke Mich Mit Deinen Kussen.
Aguirre (Zyx, 1999).
di Song of the Earth.
prova a tenere quiete e calma.La chitarra e' un puro ed edonistico
caos, mentre il piano e' ascetico,d'ordine classico.Il soul lirico di Fricke
puo' esser udito in Kyrie e Dort Ist Der Weg. La chitarra ruba lo show
principale in Der Grosse Krieger.
Lied Von Den Hohen Bergen, Der Ruf e soprattutto Singet Denn Der Gesang
Vertreibt Die Woelfe.
Sing For Song Drives Away The Wolves (Milan, 1993) contenente canzoni di
musicisti indiani(sitar,tamboura,tabla).
On The Way To A
Little Way - Nosferatu (Egg, 1978) e' l'inferiore dei due. Fricke,
Fichelscher e Gromer pennellano, invece,Brueder Des Schattens - Nosferatu
(Brain, 1978),contenente quattro pezzi. Hoere Der Du Wagst e Soehne Des
piu')Tantric Songs (Celestial Harmonies, 1981),e registrato dall'ensemble
Sei Stille, Wisse Ich Bin (Innovative Communications, 1981) e' influenzato
Dagli anni ottanta,Fricke dipese sempre piu' dalle commissioni di
Herzog.Malgrado il formato collage che assembla materiale
diverso,Fitzcarraldo (Zyx, 1982) offre poche vignette intriganti: Wehe
Gemeinschaft.
Spirit Of Peace (Cicada, 1986 - Base, 1987 - Tempel, 1992) suona come
"percorsi musicali" troppo auto-indulgenti.
Il box-set di 3 CD On The Himalaya (Spalax) colleziona Brueder Des
Schattens, Spirit Of Peace e Die Nacht Der Seele.
piccoli momenti d'ispirazione: Eine Andere Welt , Der Tod Des Banditen ,
Junge Maedchen Hozhiavie.
tastiere, Renate Knaup come voce, e Anne-Marie O'Farell all'arpa, per fare
For You And Me (Milan, 1991), un lavoro minore di convenzionale world-music
(Little Bazaari, Om Mani Padme Hum).
(City Raga, Morning Raga).
Music from Werner Herzog's Films Soundtracks (Pilz, 1982 - Spalax , 1996),
Gesang der Gesaenge (Cicada, 1988 - High Tide, 1994), Florian Fricke (Bell,
1992), Best (Milan, 1993), Movie Music (1994) Nicht Hoch Im Himmel (Mystic,
hip-hop, fu registrato dal trio Fricke, Fiedler and Hieronymus.
