A Minneapolis esercitarono i Suicide Commandos di Chris Osgood e Steve Almaas,
dei quali rimane un ottimo Make A Record (Blank, 1978) e due singoli,
Monster Au-Go-Go (1976) e Match/Mismatch (1977).
Spostatosi a New York, Almaas formo` i Crackers e infine i Beat Rodeo, un combo piu` orientato al country e al rock'n'roll. Nel 1982 incontro` Richard Barone dei Bongos e Mitch Easter che lo aiutarono a registrare il primo EP, Beat Rodeo (Coyote, 1982), sul quale brillano What's The Matter, Do You Mean It e New Girl. Staying Out Late (IRS, 1985) non riusci` pero` a mantenere quelle belle promesse, nonostante Without You e Just Friends. La maturita` venne conseguita con Home In The Heart Of The Beat (IRS, 1986), che segno` pero` anche la fine dell'avventura. Almaas continuo` a produrre album solisti di musica nostalgica, legata agli stili degli anni '50 e '60: East River Blues (Lonesome Whippoorwill, 1993), Bridge Songs (Lonesome Whippoorwill, 1995), Human All Too Human (Lonesome Whippoorwill, 1998), Kingo A Wild One (Parasol, 2001).
