I Bush Tetras erano un combo d'avanguardia della new wave di New York che usava il funk come scusa per mettere in scena piccoli melodrammi espressionisti. Il loro sound, influenzato dai cugini Contortions e dagli inglesi A Certain Ratio e Gang Of Four, faceva leva sulla chitarra dissonante di Pat Place, sul basso singhiozzante di Laura Kennedy, sulla batteria "industriale" di Dee Pop e sul canto schizoide di Cynthia Sley (che sostitui` quasi subito Adele Bertei). Too Many Creeps (1980) rivelo` il loro funk-punk androide. Things That Go Boom In The Night (1981) ne mise in evidenza le venature gotiche. Das Ah Riot mostro` parentele con le intellettuali inglesi (Raincoats, Slits).

Il funk torrido di Can't Be Funky, il punk-rock distorto di Cowboys In Africa e la trenodia psichedelica di Rituals, sull'EP Rituals (Stiff, 1981), li consacrarono fra gli antesignani del funk-punk. Boom In The Night (ROIR, 1996) is an excellent career anthology.

Beauty Lies (Tim Kerr, 1997) marks a reunion of the original line-up, sixteen years after the fact. By the standards of such dinosaur reunions, the album is more than decent: Mr Love Song could be a classic of the 1980s, Silver Chain steals a cool Creedence Clearwater Revival pace, and the middle-eastern dub of World points towards intriguing developments.

Very Very Happy (2008) is a compilation, including six re-recordings of pieces dating from the 1980s.
