David Cross played violin for King Crimson from 1972 to 1974. He was a deluxe session-man until he released his first solo album, the all-instrumental Memos from Purgatory (Red Hot, 1989), orchestrated for violin, saxophone, keyboards (Sheila Maloney) and rhythm section, whose standout is the nine-minute Meantime. The Big Picture (Red Hot, 1992) is a much more accessible work, that returns to the song format. Testing to Destruction (Red Hot, 1994) is a band album, the violin being somewhat subdued, a progressive-rock work that fused classical, jazz and rock elements. Exiles (Cleopatra, 1998) boasts an impressive line-up of distinguished guests, but the music is rarely up to the task (Hero).

Cross also plays in Radius, a band formed in 1989 by percussionist and keyboardist Geoff Serle, after he left Research. Arc Measuring (Ear-Rational, 1988) offers adventurous progressive-rock, especially in the four lengthy jams: Waterfront, Arc measuring, Aerial view, Tougher. Sightseeing (Ear Rational, 1989), featuring Sheila Maloney on keyboards and Tim Crowther on guitar, was equally engaging. Elevation (Ear Rational, 1992) has a stronger Far Eastern feeling and more convoluted counterpoint. The tours de force are Last Train Out of Tangier, Ultramarine, Sensitized/Desensitized, Sky Dive. Radius has also released There is No Peace (Voiceprint, 1995) and Civilizations (Noisy, 2001).

I tour de force sono Last Train Out of Tangier, Ultramarine, Sensitized/Desensitized, Sky Dive. I Radius pubblicarono pure There is No Peace (Voiceprint, 1995) e Civilizations (Noisy, 2001).
