Terence D'Arby, an American living in London, is a soul-rocker reminiscent of
both Family and
Prince.
Introducing the Hardline (1987), containing If You Let Me Stay, Sign Your Name (one of the best soul numbers of the time, if derivative of
Jobim's Garota de Ipanema) and Wishing Well, sold millions,
but the ambitiously eclectic and ponderous Neither Fish nor Flesh (1989)
painted him in a corner: capable of decent pop hooks, D'Arby was not exactly
a Beethoven or a Shakespeare.
He turned to humbler melodic ballads for
Symphony or Damn (1993) and Vibrator (1995).
The next album, Soular Return, was never released.
After a religious conversion, he released Wildcard (2003).
