Sull'onda dei successi di Blondie, anche a Los Angeles, dove fin dal 1975
imperversavano le Runaways, compaiono i primi girl-group degli Ottanta.
Le prime sono le Go-go`s, capitanate dalla cantante Belinda Carlisle e dalla
chitarrista Jane Wiedlin, che, con un sound esuberante ed agrodolce che
sfruttava il ritmo pimpante del surf, il canto innocente, malizioso e
graffiante del beat con contrappunti alla Supremes, nonche' il boogie pianistico
di Charlotte Caffey e la pulsazione "disco" della batteria di Gina Schock,
scalarono le classifiche con i ritornelli adolescenziali di
We Got The Beat e Our Lips Are Sealed, tratti da
Beauty And The Beat (IRS, 1981), e
Vacation, da Vacation (IRS, 1982), e con il boogie
alla Jerry Lee Lewis di Head Over Heels, da
Talk Show (IRS, 1984).
Wieldin fu la prima ad avviare una carriera solista, ma sara` la telegenica Carlisle a trovare la stardom nel piu` spudorato romanticismo anti-femminista dei girl-group con Mad About You (1986) e Heaven Is A Place On Earth (1987). Diventata finalmente adulta, provera` a trasformarsi in cantautrice da ballo alla Madonna su Live Your Life Be Free (MCA, 1991) e Real (Virgin, 1993), circondata da veterani della scena di Los Angeles (Pat Smear dei Germs, i fratelli McDonald dei Redd Kross, e la fida Caffey). A Woman & A Man (1997).... Return Of The Valley Of The Go-Go's (IRS, 1994) e` un'antologia che raccoglie diverse rarita`. God Bless (Beyond, 2001), the first new Go-Go's material in 17 years, is a nostalgic affair that, like most reunion, turns sour after the first few minutes. The Go-go's were the first all-female rock band that reached the top of the sales charts (a real band whose members wrote their songs and played their instruments, not just an artificial studio concoction by some cunning producer).
