Hoboken fu teatro di uno dei primi gruppi punk al femminile,
i Gut Bank, che inizialmente comprendevano anche Bob Bert (poi con i Sonic
Youth). La formazione giunta in studio nel 1986 per Dark Ages (Coyote) era
capeggiata da Karyn Kuhl (canto e prima chitarra) e comprendeva Tia Palmisano
(batteria), Alice Genese (basso) e un solo maschio, Mike Korman (canto e
chitarra ritmica).
I brani di questo album, deformati dai singhiozzi e dalle scordature ossessivamente metalliche della scuola Sonic Youth, sono improntati a un selvatico e cadenzato rock and roll alla X (Bloodlust, Shake), che spesso trascende in scapigliati "punk-a-billy" (Without Skin, Guilt As Sin), o in pow-wow sfiancati da sincopi nervosissime (My Father's Gun). Blues deraglianti a ritmo "ferroviario" (Trust Me) e ballate spettrali alla Siouxsee (Lost Again) completano il panorama di una musica forte e sinistra, ritmicamente sempre incalzante e armonicamente fantasiosa. Le partiture cacofoniche li elevano anche a precursori del "noise-pop". Il gruppo venne lapidato dalla critica, che non capi` (e forse non ascolto`) questo disco anticipatore, pieno della carica e della rabbia delle riot grrrrls anni prima che nascessero. Kuhl, Genese and Palmisano formed an alternative rock band, Sexpod, documented on the EP Home (Go-Kart, 1994) and the album Goddess Blues (Slab, 1997). Alice Genese released the single Stay (Olympian, 2012) and the EP Sticks and Bones (Angry Love, 2014). Mike Korman released the solo albums Hoboken Rocks (2011) and Liberty Reign (2015). Karyn Kuhl formed the Karyn Kuhl Band and released the album Songs for the Dead (2013). She then collaborated with James Mastro of the Bongos on the EPs The Stars Will Bring You Home (2016) and Hey Kids (2019). |
