Mali's vocalist Salif Keita was (1969) a co-founder with Tidiane Kone' of the Super Rail Band and (1972) a member of horn-band Les Ambassadeurs, that cut the epic Mandjou (1979). His first solo album, the dramatic Soro (1987), incorporated rock arrangements and took advantage of western studio techniques, while remaining faithful to his African roots. But the sophisticated dance music fo Ko-Yan (1989), Amen (1991), with jazz keyboardist Joe Zawinul and guitarist Carlos Santana, and Folon (1995) owes more to the arrangers than to the singer.
