L.L. Cool J (ovvero "Ladies Love Cool James", alias James Todd Smith)
fu il tipico esponente della seconda fase dell'hip hop,
quando furono gli adolescenti stessi del Queens (e non i
loro dj) a incidere i dischi. Anche lui si serviva di un dj, Cut Creator,
che pero` e` del tutto asservito al suo genio artistico.
I Need A Beat (1984) fu una delle rivelazioni del 1984.
Reso celebre a soli 17 anni da I Can't Live Without My Radio (1985),
inno alle ghetto-blasters (i giganteschi radio-registratori dei rapper),
canto` gli splendori e le miserie del ghetto con cinismo degno di Madonna e
melodramma degno di Springsteen, con erotismo degno di Prince e
soprattutto con grinta degna dell'heavy metal in
I Need A Beat (1985) e Rock The Bells (1985).
Ma I'm Bad (1987),
con tanto di contrabbasso da film noir e tanto di sirene della polizia,
I Need Love (1988), il primo singolo rap a toccare la vetta delle charts
(il brano che di fatto lo promosse da "rude boy" a sex symbol),
e soprattutto Going Back To Cali (1988), forse il capolavoro dell'intero
metal-rap (e certo il piu` jazzato), eleggono la sua arte anche ad una forma
di iper-fusion iper-realista e iper-egocentrica. A dominare i suoi scenari
urbani sara` infatti sempre la sua istrionica mitomania, anche quella uno
standard dei b-boy della sua generazione (I'm That Type Of Guy, 1989).
He moved closer to the pop mainstream with Bigger and Deffer (1988), Walking With a Panther (1989), Mama Said Knock You Out (1990). The latter, produced by Marley Marl, was his best-selling album. He tried to adapt to the new styles of hip-hop on 14 Shots to the Dome (1993), inspired by gangsta-rap, and Mr Smith (1995), inspired by sophisticated rap. His saga continued in a separate dimension with Phenomenon (1997), Greatest of All Time (2000), 10 (2002), DEFinition (2004), Todd Smith (2006). |
LL Cool J
sang about the splendors and the miseries of the ghetto on
Radio (1985), and then proceeded to coin a
hyper-realistic and hyper-egocentric hyper-fusion on the subsequent albums.
