The Moberlys were among the pioneers of 1980s power-pop in Seattle.
The band was formed by singer and guitarist Jim Basnight at the end of the
1970s, recorded one album and then disappeared for a decade.
Jim Basnight And The Moberlys (Safety First, 1980) is nevertheless
a gem of the "American graffiti" revival that was centered mainly in
Los Angeles and New York.
Live In The Sun could compete with contemporary effervescent
surf-based songs by Beat and
Fleshtones.
First Album (Precedent, 1995) contains also the tracks of a 1984 EP.
Basnight's solo Pop Top (Precedent, 1993)
pivots on Tom Petty's blue-collar
folk-rock style. Hello May Jane and Restless Night are
the catchiest of a bunch of uninspired imitations.
A number of cassettes followed, then Basnight formed the
Rockinghams, whose debut EP,
Monsters Of Rock (Precedent, 1996), is equally derivative, albeit
a little more energetic (Uncertain).
