The duo of groove virtuoso Eric Barrier and roaring rhyme stylist
William "Rakim Allah" Griffin,
which in 1985 assumed the name Eric B. & Rakim, was one of the powerhouses of
early hip-hop, defining the genre via
Eric B. Is President (1986)
I Ain't No Joke (which sampled James Brown)
and I Know You Got Soul (which became the launchind pad for M/A/R/R/S),
collected on their seminal debut album,
Paid in Full (1987),
Follow the Leader, title-track of Follow the Leader (1988), and
Friends (1989).
These tracks pioneered a sophisticated style of hip-hop, both rhythmically
(Eric's James Brown samples and lyrically (Rakim's fluent, almost melismatic
rapping).
They faded quickly when the new generation introduced themes and sounds that
made the stripped-down raps of
Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em (1990) and
Don't Sweat the Technique (1992) sound naive.
Rakim released the solo albums
The 18th Letter (1997) and The Master (1999).
After a ten-year hiatus, he returned with The Seventh Seal (2009).

Il duo composto dal virtuoso del groove Eric Barrier ed il ruggente stilista della metrica William "Rakim Allah" Griffin, che nel 1985 prese il nome di "Eric B. e Rakim", furono una delle centrali energetiche dell'hip hop delle origini, definendone le basi con "Eric B. Is President (1986) I ain't no Joke (che saccheggiava James Brown) e I know you got soul (che divenne la pista di lancio per M/A/R/R/S), tutte raccolte nel loro seminale album di debutto; Paid in Full (1987), Follow the leader, title-track del lavoro successivo (1988), e Friends (1989). Queste tracce aprivano la strada ad uno stile hip-hop pi— sofisticato del solito, sia ritmicamente (con i sample di James Brown) che liricamente (il rap di Rakim fluente e punteggiato di melismi).
