George Strait, nato a Poteet, in Texas, nel 1952, è praticamente il fondatore del movimento neo-tradizionalista della musica country. Dopo un periodo in una band country, gli Ace In The Hole, negli anni '70, Strait iniziò la sua carriera come solista con Unwound (1981) e Down and Out (1981). Fedele al detto "se non è rotto, non aggiustarlo", raramente cambiava stile oppure osava sperimentare. I suoi album erano semplici imitazioni dell'honky tonk vecchio stile e dello swing western.

Strait Out of The Box (1995) è un cofanetto di quattro CD che riassume la sua carriera.

Anche all'interno degli standard della musica country, pochissimi musicisti sono stati così monotoni nella loro carriera: Holding My Own (MCA, 1992), Easy Come, Easy Go (MCA, 1993), Lead On (MCA, 1994), Blue Clear Sky (MCA, 1996), Carrying Your Love with Me (1997), con One Night At A Time, One Step at a Time (1998), Always Never the Same (1999), George Strait (2000), con Go On, The Road Less Traveled (MCA, 2001).

L'aspetto più impressionante di album come Honkytonkville (2003) e Somewhere Down In Texas (2005) era quanto fossero privi di sorprese.

It Just Comes Natural (MCA, 2006), con Give It Away di Jamey Johnson e Texas Cookin' di Guy Clark, festeggiava i suoi 30 anni di carriera.
