Progressive rap of the kind pioneered by Public Enemy thrived with groups such as Arrested Development, the project of Atlanta-based rapper Todd "Speech" Thomas and disc-jockey Tim "Headliner" Barnwell. On their debut album, 3 Years 5 Months and 2 Days In The Life (1992), whose title refers to the time it took to find a record contract, they largely dispensed with the anger of early rappers and instead delivered soulful and uplifting statements such as Tennessee, People Everyday (based on Sly Stone's Everyday People) and Mr Wendal, that appealed to mainstream audience as well as to hardcore militants. Alas, Zingalamaduni (1994) showed all the limits of the duo, which eventually disbanded. By the standards of rap, their style was bucolic, influenced by gospel music and spirituals but propelled by urban rhythms.

Speech recorded his first solo in 1996.
