The semi-improvised jazzcore of Blowhole (SST, 1995) relies more heavily
on the rhythm section of
Bill Crawford's bass and Vince Meghrouni's drums.
Clowngasm and the lengthy Bring On The Painkillers stand out.
This was the last album recorded by this all-instrumental trio.
Saved From Death In The Dream World is a collaboration with
Jack Brewer.
Then Atherton and Crawford left the group, and were replaced by bassist Steve
Reed, keyboardist Don Carroll and guitarist Jeremy Keller.
Cigars Oysters And Booze (SST, 1996), no more sax-centered, sounds
less eccentric and more musical (Calling All Kittens).
What the band has lost in creativity, it has acquired in mass appeal.
Poor Mr Rockstar (SST, 1997) is even more funk-jazz than
their first
album (Pissums), although the standout is a punk-ier tune,
Slugfest.
The evolution towards jazz is completed with
Sonic Business Environment (SST, 1998), that tops a few jazz charts.
