The epic country ballad Bloody 98 is the standout on
Home Grown (Roadrunner, 1997), that otherwise suffers from the inept
use of rugged guitars.
Black Dog and Generic America have the muscles of southern boogie
but the heart of a Tom Petty melodrama.
Tales Of A Traveler (Roadrunner, 1999) is a full-band record, not just
the record of a duo singing folk songs, and, by their standards, the songs
boast elaborate productions.
While Poppa and When You're Not Mine relish in the duo's
traditional folk-pop fare, the shuffle Just Passing Through and several
other songs experiment with structure and arrangement.
The record also boasts (again, by their standards) a hard-driving sound, as in
the rocking Comicbook Kid, the rhythm and blues number
Sleepin' In My Shoes and the funk and soul-infected
My Wicked Wicked Ways.
Roots (Blue Mountain, 2001) is a collection of traditionals, mainly
Appalacian folksongs, ancient English ballads and some blues.
