The Fluid were formed in the mid-1980s out of the ashes of hardcore groups in the Denver scene. Headed by singer John Robinson, The Fluid fit into a wave of revival, with garage rock as vibrant as it is derivative, on occasion imitating the Stooges. Their first album from 1986, Punch'N'Judy (Rayon), and their follow-up Clear Back Paper (Sub Pop, 1988), with Cold Outside, Try Try Try, and It's My Time, are attempts with little success in this direction.
The band's golden age began in 1989, with their album Roadmouth and a more focused twin-guitar sound (James Clower and Rick Kulwicki). The depraved rock and roll of Hooked, Cop A Plea, and Twisted & Pissed, in the vein of the New York Dolls, along with the sickly ballad Ode To Miss Lodge, lend more credibility to their imitations. The progressive hard rock of Fool's Rule opens up new perspectives.
Their progression towards a noisier and more modern sound continues with their EP Glue and songs that pair the explosive fury of hardcore punk with the superficial riffs of power pop: Black Glove, Candy, and Pretty Mouse sound like they came out of a fiery furnace, with their racket redeeming the usual lack of originality.
Purplemetalflakemusic (Hollywood, 1993), with My Kind and On My Feet, confirms the key variable of the equation: a lot of craft, but little genius.
In 1994 the group dissolved and the drummer Garrett Shavlik decided to devote himself to his side project Spell.
The Fluid are your typical band kept alive by a record industry hungry for talent, but unable to put out a disc that is really worth listening to. Their catalog is largely unimaginative with a handful of decent songs.

sembrano uscite da una fornace rovente, e riscattano con il baccano la consueta
carenza di originalita`.

I Fluid sono il tipico complesso tenuto in vita da un'industria discografica
affamata di talenti, ma che non sono mai riusciti a completare un disco che
davvero valga la pena di ascoltare. Il repertorio consta per lo piu` di brani
senza fantasia e di un pugno di canzoni decorose.
