Hamster Theatre is the
all-instrumental project of
Colorado-based
multi-instrumentalist
Dave Willey, a part-time Thinking Plague.
Hamster Theatre (1995) introduced his brand of progressive-rock.
Jazz trombonist Jon Stubbs joined him for the live
Siege On Hamburger City (1998).
Carnival Detournement (Cuneiform, 2001) is the first album recorded
by a full band.
Vermilion Hue OVer Lake Lausanne is their (conceptual) tour de force,
encompassing reggae steps, King Crimson-ian passages and a touch of
Djam Karet's twisted heavy metal.
The other prominent element of their music is classical:
What Makes You Think starts with a "fauve" fanfare worthy of Stravinsky
that slowly decomposes in dissonant cacophony.
Theirs is progressive-rock for the new century, contaminated by countless
rhythms and accents. Furthermore,
the compositions are dismembered in a methodically illogal manner.
The core of Jeanne-Marie is a romantic folk songs, although the rhythm
and the clarinet/accordion arrangement drag it through voodoo swamps,
blues plantations and jazz lofts.
Vang Vang is an even crazier motif,
waltzing away in a frenzy through a soundscape of found noises.
The Turn Of Events toys with fair and circus music.
Half of the pieces don't make it to three minutes, and it is a pity.
The album does not have the cohesive feeling that would come from longer
and more complex compositions.
The ambitions of Dave Wiley and Jon Stubbs were even more obvious on
The Public Execution of Mister Personality (2006), that dispensed with
the nuances and grounded the pieces more firmily in the tradition of the
Canterbury school and Frank Zappa, plus hints of jazz, world and classical music,
via an arsenal of rock, jazz and classical instruments
(accordion, organ, bells, harmonium, guitarron, piano, zither, violin, ukulele, bass, guitar, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, flute, mandolin, banjo, marimba and drums).

part-time nei Thinking Plague.
live Siege On Hamburger City (1998).
paludi voodoo, piantagioni blues e soffitte jazz. Vang Vang e' un pezzo
ancor piu' folle, impeto in un panorama musicale rumoroso. The Turn Of Events
The Public
Execution of Mister Personality (2006), piu' diretto e nella
tradizione
della scuola di Canterbury e
Frank Zappa, oltre a cenni di jazz, world music e classica, resi
tramite un arsenale di
rock, jazz e strumenti classici (fisarmonica, organo, campane,
armonium,
guitarron, piano, cetra tirolese, violino, ukulele, basso, chitarra,
trombone, sax,
clarinetto, flauto, mandolino, banjo, marimba e batteria).
Pezzi: Race Against Time, "162", We Unearth the Lost Book of Mister
Personality
and Its Consequences, Reddy 4 Luv, The Quasdi Day Room Ceremonial
Quadrille,
Love Theme from "All Clytemnestra on the Western Front", Oye Comatose,
Litost,
La Sacre D'Merde, The Quasi Day Room Ceremonial Tango, The Fairytale
in Reverse,

documenta una performance
live.
