Oakland's Machine Head, fronted by guitarist Robb Flynn (of Vio-lence fame, a thrash band that recorded three mediocre albums between 1988 and 1991), debuted with the conventional thrash-metal of Burn My Eyes (1994) and then shifted to the traditional rap-metal of The Burning Red (1999) and Supercharger (2001).

By comparison, Through the Ashes of Empires (2003) was at least powerful, thanks to the addition of Vio-Lence's guitarist Phil Demmel and to better songs such as Imperium. They started a new, more serious career, with The Blackening (2007), perhaps their artistic peak thanks to the ten-minute Clenching the Fists of Dissent, and Unto the Locust (Roadrunner, 2011), with the "sonata" I Am Hell.
