Monaural is a Michigan band that debuted with the EP Harmonic/ Rhodes (Burnt Hair, 1996). The majestic and expanded instrumental music of those two long tracks was inspired by the British shoegazers. Monitor Interference (BaDaDing, 1999) drifts from shoegazing to mantra. The compositions build up dreamy atmospheres with a modicum of means. Dot (nine minutes) arises from flurries of wind, from a dub bass line and a fluttering of cymbals: however, the heart of the track is the metallic tones of the guitar, often stretched into transcendental drones. A10 is a slow-motion documentary of electronic comets. Fragile and elusive (and slightly funky) guitar tones creep out of Last Exit's icy structures. The band is not fearful of the last two tracks' excursions in funereal and cosmic music. Certainly one of the most creative and subdued dub albums ever, closer in spirit to ambient music.

La musica strumentale maestosa e dilatata di questi due lunghi brani era ispirata agli shoegazer Britannici. Monitor Interference (BaDaDing, 1999) passa dagli shoegazer al mantra. I brani costruiscono atmosfere oniriche con il minimo dei mezzi. Dot (nove minuti) prende forma da folate di vento, da una linea di basso dub e da uno sfarfallio di cimbali: il cuore del brano sono pero` gli accordi metallici di chitarra, spesso allungati in droni trascendenti. A10 e` un documentario al rallentatore di comete elettroniche. Toni di chitarra fragili e impalpabili (e appena funky) spuntano anche dalle strutture gelide di Last Exit. Il gruppo non ha paura di sconfinare nella musica funerea e cosmica delle ultime due tracce. I Monaural hanno indubbiamente un tocco delicato che li distingue dalle legioni del dub, e li imparenta con quelle dell'ambientale.
