Summary.
Rodan set a standard for music that was neither atmospheric nor abstract, but a bit of both, with the lenghty conceptual compositions/improvisations of Rusty (1994). The interplay among Jason Noble's and Jeff Mueller's guitars, Tara Jean O'Neil's bass and Kevin Coultas' drums contained elements of rock, jazz and classical music, but the "songs" didn't quite fall into either category.

Rodan revived the glorious post-rock Louisville scene starting with the single How The Winter Was Passed (3 Little Girls, 1993), the EP Aviary, and the album Rusty (Quarterstick, 1994). Their long conceptual tracks are enlivened by highly dramatic instrumental arrangements, making use of both the slow, deafening dynamics of Sling and Bitch Magnet and the catatonic stasis of Codeine, but in a more improvised context.
This "progressive" punk finds unique balance in the jagged rhythms and mood swings of The Everyday World Of Bodies (twelve minutes) and in the rarefied, hypnotic, magical atmosphere of Gauge. The track that slowly takes shape from the nebula of chords and riffs in Toothfairy Retribution Manifesto and the abyss of chimes in which the structure of Bible Silver Corner disappears (new age music for punk?) demonstrate the level of abstraction achievable in the interplay between Jason Noble and Jeff Mueller’s guitars and Tara Jean O'Neil’s bass, supported by Kevin Coultas’ solid drumming. The surprise is that there is even room for a song like Shiner, strong, driving, and concise.

Perhaps even better is the single with Milk And Melancholy and Exoskeleton (3 Little Girls, 1994), both shaped around a vortex of contrasts.

Their practice is to let the elements of a song ferment, to allow them to decompose, to encourage dismemberment, but even before the song has taken form, before a song even exists, even, in a sense, before they have started playing.

From the dissolution of this group would emerge equally important formations: June Of 44, Rachel's, Sonora Pine.
