Vegetarian Meat is a duo of multi-instrumentalists
(Charles "Alex McAulay" Douglas and Manish Kalvakota) from Philadelphia.
Let's Pet (No 6, 1995) is an album that stylistically belongs to the
new wave of the late 1970s and early 1980s, replete with nods to
Violent Femmes,
They Might Be Giants,
Half Japanese and
Tall Dwarfs .
Their art of catchy but demented ditties were among the most creative sounds
of that year (particularly One Way Down and Silver And Gold)
but few people noticed.
The duo disbanded after releasing one more single, Hey (No 6, 1997),
and recording a second album that was never released.
Charles Douglas happily recovered from a mental disorder and returned to
music with the solo albums Minor Wave (1995) and The Burdens of Genius (1998),
later collected on one disc, 31 Flavors (No 6, 2001).
The Lives Of (No 6, 1999), an album featuring Mo Tucker on drums, sounds like a Velvet Underground tribute.
