Norwegian black-metal project Borknagar was the invention of guitarist Oystein Garnes Brun. He assembled veterans of the Norwegian scene for Borknagar (1995). The project became a real band for The Olden Domain (1997), the real manifesto of their "epic metal". The idea was further refined on The Archaic Course (1998), perhaps their best album.

Line-up changes, including the arrival of Solefald's keyboardist Lars Nedland, created a new sound on Quintessence (2000) and Empiricism (2001): basically, more keyboards and more melodies.
