Cubanate (led by vocalist Marc Heal and guitarist Phil Barry) push punk furor
and techno hedonism to new extremes.
Their art progressed through
The single Body-Burn (Dynamica, 1993) already displayed the key elements
of their art: Trent Reznor-ian vocals, metal guitar samples, drum machines.
Guitar roars, electronic pulse and human screams are blended into a
psychological nightmare on the album Antimatter (Dynamica, 1993),
which the band reworked and streamlined for the American version.
The EP Metal contains the catchy Angeldust and Metal.
Their "aggro" style truly bloomed on the second album,
Cyberia (Polygram, 1994), much better produced than the previous one,
and recorded by a line-up reduced to the duo of Heal and Barry
following the schism that spawned the techno ensemble K-Nitrate
of Xenophobia (Cybertech, 1994) fame.
The title-track is the ouverture: one minute of the singer vomiting on a
ear-splitting guitar distortion.
Then the disc picks up terrifying speed with the
savage ritual of sadic violence
Oxyacetylene, propelled by a pounding techno beat and ripped apart
by scorching guitar riffs and psycho vocals.
The excitement grows with Hatesong's stomping, tribal rhythm and
anthemic riff.
Transit applies the same principles but focusing on
shaking the dance-floor with looping and layered drum machines.
Skeletal resumes the sadic sonic massacre
of Oxyacetylene, just two notches louder.
The duo manages to concoct even an infernal power-ballad like
Human Drum .
The thundering Industry is a worthy ending to such a stormy journey.
Cubanate have composed a non-stop locomotive of high-octane romps that leverages
on a new approach to percussive and industrial music.
Compared with so much hell,
Barbarossa (Wax Trax, 1996) sounds a little stereotyped
Joy, Barbarossa and Lord Of The Flies are
inferior imitations of Cyberia's sound.
Interference (Wax Trax, 1998)
incorporates drum'n'bass into their sound. At least in
It , Hinterland and, above all, the explosive 9:59
the concept works, although the extended An Airport Bar may be taking
it too seriously.
Not as brutal as previous releases, Interference is simply the
admission that an age is over.
Marc Heal also co-wrote the C-Tec "synthetic symphony"
Darker (Wax Trax, 1997) with
JeanLuc de Meyer and Rhys Fulber.

prese l'abbrivio
dal singolo Body-Burn (Dynamica, 1993), che gia` mostrava gli
elementi chiave della loro arte: voce alla Trent Reznor, samples di chitarra
metal, drum machines. La chitarra ruggisce, l'elettronica pulsa e le urla
umane sono mescolate dentro a un incubo psicologico nell'album Antimatter
(Dynamica, 1993), che il gruppo ha rielaborato e semplificato per la versione
americana. L'EP Metal contiene la magnetica Angeldust e Metal.
Il loro stile "aggro" e` veramente fiorito sul loro secondo album, Cyberia
(Polygram, 1994), registrato molto meglio del precedente album, con la
formazione ridotta per la registrazione al duo Heal-Barry, seguendo lo
scisma che ha dato il via all'insieme techno K-Nitrate con la famosa
Xenophobia (Cybertech, 1994). La traccia che da' il nome all'album fa da
apertura: un minuto del cantante che vomita su un distorsore ear-splitting
per chitarra. Poi il disco acquista una velocita` terrificante con la violeza
sadica da rituale selvaggio di Oxyacetylene, mosso da un martellare di
percussioni techno e lacerato separatamente da riffs di chitarra bruciante e
voce psicopatica. L'eccitamento cresce con Hatesong, un ritmo tribale
calpestante e dei riff spasmodici. Transit applica gli stessi principi, ma
focalizzandosi sullo scuotere il pavimento da ballo con una drum machines
ciclica su diversi livelli. Skeletal richiama il sadico massacro sonico di
Oxyacetylene, soltanto due incisioni pi— potente. Il duo e` capace di
preparare anche una potente ballata infernale come Human Drum. La
tuoneggiante Industry e` un finale degno a un viaggio tempestoso come questo.
I Cubanate hanno composto una locomotiva non-stop ad alti ottani, dal gioco
chiassoso, che eleva a un nuovo approccio percussioni e musica industrial.
Paragonata a tutto questo inferno, Barbarossa (Wax Trax, 1996) souna un
pochino stereotipata. Joy, Barbarossa e Lord Of The Flies sono insomma
imitazioni inferiori del sound di Cyberia.
Interference (Wax Trax, 1998) introduce batteria e basso all'interno del
loro sound. Almeno in It, Hinterland e, soprattutto, nell'esplosiva 9:59 il
concetto funziona, sebbene la stessa An Airport Bar potrebbe averlo preso un
po' troppo seriamente. Non brutale come le precedenti produzioni,
Interference e` semplicemente l'ammissione che un'era e` finita.
