Death Organ is a quintet from Sweden (Klas Hagglund on bass,
Marcus Kallstrom on drums, Jocke Sjostrom on percussions, Wibarj on organ,
Patrik Schultz on vocals) that plays progressive-rock with
a very prominent and distorted organ in the forefront.
9 To 5 (Belle Antique, 1996) features seven visceral and driving
compositions (Hate, Sane?, Workers, Abused,
Greed, Control, Miles Away) but the poor recording quality
detracts from the overall effect.
Universal Stripsearch (Ad Perpetuam Memoriam, 1997) highlights the sound
of each instrument and brings out the distinctive 1960s' rhythm'n'blues
sound (think Atomic Rooster) in solemn and visceral hymns like Ahead,
in catchy, choral tunes like Done!, in terrible mini-suites like
Universeal Stripsearch and Tom Sawyer (the latter's organ riff
a little too derivative of Yes),
in majestically desperate jams like 3D Days.
The quintet concocts a dense and punishing style that borders on death metal
(Scapegoat).
