belong to the ranks of British bands
(Boyracer,
Gallon Drunk,
Jacob's Mouse)
that are not afraid of going the opposite way of Brit-pop.
Debut album
Gutter Erotica (World Domination, 1997) was reissued as
Demeter (Beggars Banquet, 1998). It includes their classic
Voyeur's Blues.
Charlie Finke's demented vocal effects were the main attraction,
but the convoluted, angular, harsh arrangements were no less innovative.
My Idle Hands (Beggars Banquet, 1999) is even noisier and
bluesier (Man O' Fire, Giant Haystacks, Creepers Reef,
Detunabilly).
The instrumental The Pool At Blood Gulley shows enough talent
to stretch ten times longer than it does.
But Unt (Space Baby, 2003) sounds like a bad Jon Spencer imitation.

I Penthouse (conosciuti negli Stati Uniti come 50 Tons Of Black Terror) appartengono a quella schiera di band britanniche (come Boyracer, Gallon Drunk, Jacob's Mouse) che non hanno paura di andare nel senso opposto al brit-pop. Il loro album di debutto, Gutter Erotica (World Domination, 1997) è stato ristampato come Demeter (Beggars Banquet, 1998) ed include il loro classico Voyeur's Blues. La caratteristica principale sono i deliranti effetti vocali di Charlie Finke, ma gli arrangiamenti contorti, aspri e spigolosi sono non meno innovativi.
My Idle Hands (Beggars Banquet, 1999) è ancora più rumoroso e "bluesy" (Man O' Fire, Giant Haystacks, Creepers Reef, Detunabilly). La strumentale The Pool At Blood Gulley mostra tanto talento da poter essere anche dieci volte più lunga, ma Unt (Space Baby, 2003) somiglia più che altro ad una brutta imitazione di Jon Spencer.
