The revival of female-led revivalist bands at the end of the 1980s in Britain
produced several faceless phenomena, including
Rose Carlotti's Heart Throbs. Their fame lasted just about one year,
when their singles (Blood From A Stone, Toy, Dreamtime)
competed with the likes of the Primitives.
The band virtually disappeared after the album
Cleopatra Grip (Elektra, 1990) proved their total lack of ideas.
Instead of sprightly Sixties melodies, the songs offer danceable, second-hand
dark-punk.
After the band reformed, having replaced the rhythm section,
Jubilee Twist (A&M, 1991)
continued the progression towards a more intellectual sound with
Winter Came Too Soon and The Girl Became The Stairs.
Vertical Smile (One Little Indian, 1993) veers towards charts-oriented
hard-rock.
