Ensemble Nimbus, formed in 1992, is a Swedish quartet (keyboards, clarinet, viola and
percussions) that belongs to the tradition of Scandinavia's orchestral-grade
progressive-rock with a touch of Univers Zero.
They debuted with the brilliant stylistic collage of
Key Figure (Ad Perpetuam Memoriam, 1994).
Scapegoat (Record Heaven, 1998)
is even more influenced by Univers Zero and by 1970s'
progressive-rock (King Crimson, Henry Cow).
Kirk Chilton's on violin and viola,
Lars Bjork's on clarinets,
Hasse Bruniusson on percussions,
and Hakan Almkvist on guitar and Keyboards are skilled musicians who excel
at odd scores such as Algebra of Needs,
Cross of Infamy, Middle of the Moment.
The seven-minute psychodrama Offering towers over everything else,
but the folkish Three Figures and the
classical-sounding aria of Epigram may be truer to the musicians' hearts.
Garmonbozia (Record Heaven, 2000) is almost split in three different
souls: the band-oriented material, oddly reminiscent of
Frank Zappa's Wakajawaka, such as the
three-movement suite Stories From The Blue Cage,
and The Arrow Of Time; the classical-sounding pieces,
such as Absolute Zero, Scapegoat and
Tornado hunting (by far the most interesting compositions on the album);
and traditional progressive fare such as Anita's scarf.
