Roots Manuva (Rodney Smith) was a British rapper. The oneiric production of Brand New Second Hand (1999) owed to drum'n'bass and trip-hop, and his Jamaican roots crept out on Run Come Save Me (2001), that was also unusual for its confessional content.
Awfully Deep (2005) was an even more introspective and almost
manic depressive work but sonically less adventurous, with dub and reggae still
being the main sonic ingredients.
Slime & Reason (2008) abandoned the confessional stance for more
public rants, while letting the music flow.
4Everevolution (2011) is another lighter affair, with even slower
rhythms and more live instruments, a hodgepodge of comfortable
dub, electro, garage, grime and old-fashioned hip-hop that peaks with the
seven-minute The Throes of It.
