Unbelievable Truth were formed in 1993 in Oxford (England) by
multi-instrumentalist Nigel Powell and singer-guitarist Andy Yorke (brother
of Thom Yorke from Radiohead).
Their early singles, Stone (1997), Higher Than Reason (1998)
and Solved (1998) are all collected on debut album
Almost Here (Virgin, 1998), a collection of
pensive, understated folk-pop tunes
with spare arrangements of acoustic and electronic instruments
(guitars, piano, organ, strings) that stands like the
antithesis of Oasis' Brit-pop and
sounds like an encyclopedia of subdued rock music, running the gamut from
the Smiths (Solved) to the
Blue Nile (the majestic twang of Be Ready),
from Chris Isaak (the plaintive yodel of Building)
to Jeff Buckley (Stone),
from Talk Talk (the dilated atmosphere of Almost Here)
to an original style that mixes them all
(Same Mistakes, perhaps their masterpiece).
The group disbanded after Sorry Thank You (2000), that yielded three
more singles, and Misc. Music, a collection of rare, live and
unreleased tracks.
