Adele (Adkins) emerged in the late 2000s as another songstress of the
British soul-rock revival popularized by Amy Winehouse. The adolescent Adele
became a sensation with the soul ballads of 19 (2008), notably
Chasing Pavements and Daydreamer, but it was
21 (2011) that turned her into a star, thanks mainly to the gritty
rhythm & blues of Rolling In The Deep, boasting an anthemic
crescendo and a gospel choir.
21 (XL, 2011) contains diligent ballads like the soaring
Don't You Remember and especially the piano elegy Someone Like You
but nothing that compares to
Rolling In The Deep.
Adele's 25 (2015) set a new world record by selling 3.38 million copies
in its first week, beating Nsync's 15-year old record (2.4 million copies of No Strings Attached sold in the first week).
