Deer Tick was a one-man band on
War Elephant (2007): just John McCauley.
His country-rock was better shaped on
Born On Flag Day (2009) by a regular quartet, and on
The Black Dirt Sessions (2008), that mostly contains leftovers from the
2008 sessions.
Divine Providence (2011) was a better (or at least more vibrant)
exercise in trite bar-band stereotypes
(The Bump, Let's All Go to the Bar) but hardly groundbreaking.
Like its predecessors, it should have been an EP to remove all the fluff.
John McCauley formed the Diamond Rugs with the
Los Lobos' saxophonist Steve Berlin,
Ian Saint Pe of the Black Lips, Bryan Dufresne of Six Finger Satellite
and others. Diamond Rugs (2012) was, at best, an eclectic collection
of roots-rock, and, at worst, a waste of great talents.
