Heavy-metal quartet Dredg (vocalist Gavin Hayes, guitarist Mark Engles, bassist Drew Roulette, drummer Dino Campanella), based in the San Francisco Bay Area,
debuted with an innovative EP, Orph (1997).
Their prog-metal concept album Leitmotif (Universal, 1999 - Interscope, 2001) boasted intricate multi-layered sonic patterns but "felt" like a
smooth flow of alternating instruments and songs.
Unfortunately, El Cielo (Interscope, 2002) was merely a bad imitation
of Leitmotif (1999), with better production but less inspiration.
in the end the feeling of background muzak
Catch Without Arms (Interscope, 2005) continued the trend towards a mellower and
more accessible sound.
The ambitious The Pariah, The Parrot, The Delusion (Ohlone, 2009),
basically a philosophical concept, tried hard to regain the punch of the first
album but lacked enough inspiration to support the laudable lyrics.
