English producer Jon Hopkins crafted melodic ambient music on
Opalescent (1999),
Contact Note (2004),
Insides (2009),
Monsters (2011).
Immunity (Domino, 2013) was his most ambitious album yet, with much longer
pieces and more mature architecture:
the irresistible rhythmic crescendo of the eight-minute Open Eye Signal,
the haunting machine music of the nine-minute Collider,
celestial new-age ecstasy of the twelve-minute Sun Harmonics,
closing with the ten-minute
Immunity, ambient techno peppered with neoclassical piano and barely whispered vocals.
The dances are restrained and subdued, and nonetheless anchored to a transcendental logic.
