New-York based Iran, fronted by Aaron Aites featuring Kyp Malone and Peter Hoffman of the Mendoza Line, debuted with Iran (Tumult, 2000) in a vein that evoked the noise-rock and lo-fi pop styles of the 1980s.

After The Moon Boys (Tumult, 2003) Kyp Malone joined TV On The Radio.

Aites and Malone reformed the group for Dissolver (Narnack, 2009).

Kyp Malone debuted solo under the moniker Rain Machine with Rain Machine (2009), containing Smiling Black Faces. Several "songs" are much longer than the norm for singer-songwriters: Desperate Bitch (8:45), Love Won't Save You (7:56), Winter Song (10:57).
