Tycho, the project of
San Francisco-based electronic musician and visual artist Scott Hansen,
intellectually a grandchild of
Brian Eno, a nephew of the
Boards Of Canada and a sibling of
the chillwave,
crafted the subtly impressionistic downtempo post-psychedelic rhythmic
vignettes of Sunrise Projector (Gammaphone, 2004).
For example, Sunrise Projector sounds like an
ambient techno remix of
Pink Floyd's Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun.
If Dictaphone's Lament simply relies on a facile melody and loud beats,
and Cloud Generator further simplifies the structure to a ticking and tickling mechanism,
other pieces like PBS KAE
(babbling synth, alien glitches and slightly faster syncopated beats),
Lapse (intricate hip-hop rhythm and "acid" synth)
and
Past Is Prologue (booming bass, frenzied galloping percussion and
liquid jazzy keyboards)
demonstrate more complexity and dynamics.
Layers of minimalist repetition in different tones create the state of hypnosis and suspense in Overlook.
Human voices appear and disappear throughout the album, but the ones
featuring Jianda,
namely Send And Receive and A Circular Reeducation,
are more explicit in the (subdued and impenetrable) way the human voice is used,
or, better, dissolved inside the beats and the melodies.
All in all, an impressive document of digital elegance.
Past Is Prologue (Merck, 2006) recycles many of the same pieces
and adds the
exotic lounge postcard From Home (sensual female voice and cosmic orbiting feathery electronic drones),
and the languid, detuned, cyclical The Disconnect.
Tycho's music was rich in colors and unexpected events, frequently
delivering a sense of neurosis and anxiety.
The real follow-up to Past Is Prologue was
Dive (Ghostly International, 2011).
A louder but less elegant approach permeates A Walk. Add
a prominent melodic theme and you get the catchy single Hours, if not
the too pensive Daydream.
By comparison with the first album, the eight-minute Dive is hysterical:
fast beat, wavering synth line, and beathing vocals.
The old single Coastal Brake (2009), included here, was in effect a
premonition of this busier style.
Perhaps to compensate these rhythmic excesses, the album features pieces
that head in the opposite direction:
Ascension borders on exotic new-age music of the 1980s;
Adrift is a lazy sub-chill shuffle;
Elegy is a pastoral meditation for guitar and electronics.
The magic elegance of the first album, though, remained unmatched.

stonata, ciclica The Disconnect.
La musica di Tycho
appare ricca di colori ed eventi inaspettati, spesso infondendo un senso di
nevrosi ed ansia.
Il vero approfondimento
che segue Past Is Prologue è Dive (Ghostly International, 2011).
Un approccio più rumoroso ma meno elegante permea A Walk. Si aggiunga un
tema melodico prominente e si ottiene il singolo orecchiabile Hours, se
non la troppo pensierosa Daydream. In confronto al primo album, la
traccia da otto minuti Dive è isterica: beat veloce, synth ondeggiante e
voci ansimanti. Il vecchio singolo Coastal Brake (2009), incluso
nell'album, era stato in effetti premonizione di uno stile più pieno. Forse per
compensare questi eccessi ritmici, l'album include pezzi che vanno in direzione
opposta: Ascension è al limite con la musica esotica new-age degli anni
'80; Adrift è un pigro miscuglio sub-chill; Elegy è una
meditazione pastorale per chitarra ed elettronica. La magica eleganza del primo
album, però, è ancora insuperata.
