Hikaru Utada, the daughter of a producer and a singer, who had already
released
Precious (1998) under the moniker Cubic U, became a pop star with
Automatic, Time Will Tell, and Movin' On Without You,
off First Love (1999), Japan's best-selling album yet.
The hits kept coming:
Addicted to You, Wait & See (Risk) and Can You Keep a Secret?, off
Traveling, Hikari and Sakura Drops, off
Distance (2001),
Hikari off Deep River (2002),
Devil Inside off Exodus (2004),
Colors off Ultra Blue (2006),
and
Dirty Desire, off This Is the One (2009).
By this time, Utada had become one of Japan's top-selling recording artists of all time.
After a long hiatus, she returned with
the acoustic Fantome (2016), Hatsukoi (2018),
Heart Station (2018), that contains Flavor of Life,
and
Bad Mode (2022), that contains One Last Kiss.
