White Birch, the Norwegian trio of vocalist and guitarist Ola Flottum, drummer Hans Christian Almendingen and bassist Ulf Rogde, plus frequent guest Frode Løes Arnesen on keyboards,
debuted with the amateurish emocore of Self-Portrayal (1996), followed by
the four-song EP Left Hand (1997) and the
cassette To Be Not... (1996).
People Now Human Beings (1998), better produced by
Helge Steen (aka Deathprod)
is still a confused work, possibly inspired by Talk Talk.
After four years, the band made a quantum leap forward with the
slocore litanies of
Star Is Just A Sun (Glitterhouse, 2002):
the Nico-esque Silly Malone,
the anemic suspenseful psalm Love Is So Real,
the stately and jangling Beauty King (perhaps the standout),
the tenuous whispered elegy Star,
the tenderly almost catatonic Donau Movies,
etc.
They disbanded after Come Up for Air (2005).
After a nine-year hiatus,
Flottum assembled a new lineup and recorded
The Weight of Spring (2015).
